The first step in educating front line staff was building a case for EBP founded on the belief that EBP improves patient care and outcomes. Environmental readiness was assessed using the tenants contained in the Advisory Company Report on EBP (2003). The Nurse Research Specialist and a Graduate Student developed four modules for the education of EBP champions. The authors were careful to consider barriers to the advancement of EBP and incorporate upfront solutions into the education.. The modules were reviewed by the committee for input. The first module is an overview of the EBP at the institution including the process for developing the research question. Module two was created using the expertise of the library staff. This module is hands on searching for evidence on the selected clinical question with the library staff. This session includes search strategies for using Cochrane, Pub Med and related search engines and the systematic approach to recording the process. The third module incorporates the key principles for critically appraising the evidence, including Intervention Trials, Randomized Controlled Trials, Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis. The critical appraisal principles provide the clinician with a quick method for determining the validity, reliability and applicability of the study. Module four pulls the process together. The participant records the method, designs the process for implementation, measurement and dissemination of the practice change with the supervision of an EBP champion. The EBP committee will complete the four modules as a pilot project followed by evaluation and conduction of classes for committee chairs and patient care specialists. This Presentation will describe the process for developing the content of the program, educating frontline champions and strategies for successful implementation of the program.
