Practice Grounded in Evidence
Learning Objective #1: Identify the process used by a large acute care institution to implement EBP
Learning Objective #2: Describe methods for integrating EBP at the point of care
In 2001 the Institute of Medicine challenged healthcare providers to practice patient-centered care as members of an interdisciplinary team, basing decision making on evidence using a quality improvement approach and informatics. On a daily bases nurses are faced with critical clinical decisions. An explosion of scientific knowledge, technological advances coupled with increased severity of illness and a nursing shortage, demands nurses and all health care providers translate evidence into practice at the point of care. Evidence-based Practice (EBP) deemphasizes ritual, ungrounded opinions and tradition which so frequently are the basis of practice. EBP calls for nurses to examine their practice and look at reliable evidence to improve patient care “rather than do things as they have always done.” EBP is a problem solving approach integrating 1) a systematic search for a critical appraisal of the most relevant evidence to answer a burning clinical question, 2) one’s own clinical expertise, and 3) patient preferences and values. (Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, 2004) This symposium will describe the process a large acute care institution used for implementing evidence-based practice including: establishing a culture for EBP; conducting baseline measurements; creating internal expertise and EBP champions; educating frontline staff and grounding all committees in EBP; establishing systems to support EBP; and collaborating with local colleges and universities to exchange resources for EBP. A four-part program consisting of an EBP didactic, literature search competency, critical literature appraisal, and a practicum to answer a clinical question comprises the champion course requirements. This institution partnered with hospital physicians to bring state of the art informatics to the bedside for all caregivers. The presenters will also share the barriers and successes of the project and challenge the participants to take home the message.
