Evidence-Based Initiative in U.S. Military Nursing: Research to Practice
Learning Objective #1: Identify the performance improvement and research process utilized to implement evidence-based practice
Learning Objective #2: Discuss the grading schema employed for the evaluation of the quality and rating of evidence
The objective of this symposium is to disseminate the findings of three Evidence Based Practice (EBP) projects within the Military Nursing EBP research initiative. The goal of the study is to stimulate interest in the new paradigm of EBP and to provide an infrastructure that enables a sustainable EBP movement in military nursing practice. Congress dedicates billions of dollars annually to scientific investigation. However, there is no guarantee that the current scientific evidence will be translated into practice to improve patient care. The general public’s expectations of quality and cost managed care have grown over the last decade partially attributed to the consumer-focused movement and the vastly improved access to healthcare information from the internet. Consumers expect to be actively involved in the clinical decision-making process. Like its civilian counterpart, the military healthcare system is currently in an era of unprecedented accountability, requiring delivery of the highest quality of care at the lowest cost. Military healthcare providers are challenged to demonstrate increased effectiveness and efficiency. Nurses represent the largest number of clinicians in the military healthcare system and they are critical agents in the new wave of care delivery philosophy based on research and evidence.
