Normalizing Excellence in Professional Nursing Practice
Learning Objective #1: Discuss three leadership strategies to create an environment to support evidence-based practice in an acute care setting
Learning Objective #2: Describe two strategies to measure and monitor evidence-based nursing outcomes in an acute care setting
Establishing an environment conducive to evidence based practice is essential to normalizing excellence in practice. The purpose of this symposium is to describe the multi-faceted approach used at The Queen’s Medical Center (QMC) to implement evidence based nursing. After garnering corporate support, strategies in nursing leadership/management, professional education, and nursing outcomes monitoring have been developed to support evidence based nursing practice. This symposium details successful strategies, address challenges and opportunities, and describes sustainability measures. The new Professional Nursing Practice Model developed at QMC called “Caring Excellence” will be presented. Presentation #2: “Management strategies to create an evidence based nursing environment” This paper describes operational aspects of creating and maintaining evidence based practice from the perspective of the Culture of Safety through identification, analysis, and resolution of sentinel events and near-misses. Presentation #3: Strategies for measuring and monitoring evidence based nursing outcomes” This paper highlights evidence to document improvements in practice through ANA Scorecard measures, to reward improvements in practice through clinical ladders, and to communicate changes and challenges to all levels. Presentation #4: “Education strategies to create an evidence based nursing environment” This paper focuses on capacity building among nurses to ensure evidence based nursing practice from initial hire and throughout employment via initiatives such as specialty training, Front-line Leadership Academy, and competency assessment to assure best practices.
