Interventions to Increase Spiritual Competencies
Learning Objective #1: Identify spiritual competency educational needs for advanced practice nurses
Learning Objective #2: Discuss spiritual assessment and interventions for clients in several clinical settings
Nurses are mandated by the International Council of Nurses, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and the Patient’s Bill of Rights to assess spirituality and provide spiritual care of their clients. The importance of spiritual practices and their role in health and well-being should be a major focus of education and practice of the advanced practice nurse. Four data based papers will be presented. Two are a report of the results of specific interventions to increase spiritual competencies- one with advanced practice students and one with patient's with chronic migraine headaches. The third paper reports the results of an assessment of disabled persons and their level of spirituality; and the fourth discusses end of life issues with patients with Parkinson’s disease.
