Development of a Web-Based Tutorial for Nursing Students Learning Fetal Heart Rate Auscultation Skill at Red River College

Diane Evelyn Clare, RN, BN, MEd, Nursing Educator, Nursing Department, Nursing Department, Red River College, Winnipeg, MB, Canada

A problem at Red River College is that nursing students do not have sufficient opportunity to practice fetal heart auscultation skill (FHR). The purpose of this study is the development, implementation, and evaluation plan for a web-based tutorial program to supplement nursing student practice of FHR auscultation skill with childbearing women. The first research question is, “what are the requirements of nursing students learning safe fetal heart rate auscultation practice? Research question two is, “what are the appropriate objectives for a web-based tutorial for nursing students learning fetal heart rate auscultation skill?” Research question three is, “what is the appropriate content to support the web-based tutorial objectives for nursing students learning fetal heart rate auscultation skill?” Research question four is, “what are appropriate web-based tutorial development and implementation strategies for nursing students learning fetal heart rate auscultation skill?” Research question five is, “what are appropriate strategies for an evaluation plan of a web-based tutorial for nursing students learning fetal heart rate auscultation skill?” The development methodology is used to explore and develop the content, format and web-based design to consider for the nursing program. The evaluation methodology is used to determine the effectiveness of the program within two areas: (a) student evaluation of program purpose, content, objectives, operations and technology, (b) criteria to effectively evaluate the web-based program. The 27 procedural steps include an extensive review of literature related to higher education, education and technologies, maternal and newborn nursing theory, auscultation information, psychomotor skill learning, web-based program development, and clinical skill acquisition for this program. In the development phase, a formative committee reviews, responds, and comments on four forms including, (a) program and technical questionnaire (PTQ), (b) program evaluation criteria, (c) student evaluation tool and, (d) computer self-assessment questionnaire (CQ). A summative committee evaluates the web-based tutorial program using the program evaluation criteria. Results of the study are shared with the Chair of the Nursing Faculty, the Director of Distance Education, and Vice President of Academics at Red River College. The researcher drafts recommendations for the future of web-based tutorial programs for nursing students.
