Instruments measuring stigma has limitations for use in Africa. Firstly, most of them have not been built empirically, and most were validated in developed countries. The paper describes the development, format and validation of two instruments, one aimed at People Living with HIV and AIDS and another aimed at nurses. The development started with a qualitative phase, from which themes were identified and items developed. The quantitative study then tested the instrument for validity and reliability, and reduced the items. The instruments are now both available for use.
