Managing international research projects
Leana Uys, DSocSc, College of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa
Multi-country research projects, especially if the research settings are in resource-poor settings, pose a range of challenges. Nevertheless, they also have significant benefits for those involved and for the scientific endeavor. In this paper the lessons learnt during a study on HIV and AIDS stigma in five African countries, involving a Principle Investigator in a sixth country (USA), is described. Since the quality and quantity of the research products is dependent on the team and its functioning, people involved in such projects could benefit from discussions on procedures and policies developed over time.
