E 08 The Effect of EBP Integration Across a BSN Curriculum: Shaping Care Providers for the Future

Monday, 31 October 2011: 1:45 PM-3:00 PM
Description/Overview: Many faculty across the globe are teaching evidence-based practice in their curricula. However, there little research to demonstrate the effectiveness of that teaching. In a study of nurse practitioner faculty, it was found that indeed faculty reported they taught EBP, but their practices were not reflective of integration of EBP across the curricula (Melnyk et al. 2008). In this longitudinal, quasi-experimental study, researchers set out to evaluate student responses to curricular redesign focused on integration of EBP across the curriculum of an upper division BSN nursing program. An overview of study methods and concepts will be presented in the first session of this symposium. The second presentation will provide information about the specific study interventions and the measures used to evaluate study outcomes. Finally, the symposium will conclude with a discussion of the findings regarding students' beliefs about and implementation of EBP.
Learner Objective #1: Describe the importance of longitudinal evaluation of student outcomes as a reflection of effective curricular redesign.
Learner Objective #2: Discuss the effectiveness of intentional intervention to integrate EBP across a BSN curriculum.
