Learning Objective 1: Develop experiential clinical teaching and learning strategies for students in community health nursing.

Learning Objective 2: Develop partnerships with community organizations to meet health promotion and wellness needs of the community.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to meet health care needs of the community while providing community health nursing clinical experiences for students as they implemented health and wellness programs in faith-based organizations in rural communities.
Background:  Nursing instructors are constantly seeking experiential learning for students in community health nursing where theoretical concepts can be applied.  Often faith-based organizations in rural communities have small congregations and lack resources to meet their health promotion needs and are amenable to receiving services.
Design/Methods:  Students were divided into groups of 5 or 6 and given the assignment to develop and implement a health and wellness program for a faith-based organization.  Additional instructions included were to identify and work with a key person of the faith-based organization, conduct a needs assessment, and develop, implement and evaluate a health and wellness program utilizing theoretical concepts discussed in class.
Results:  Students were able to identify faith-based organizations willing to work with them during the semester to meet their desired learning outcomes for clinical. Faith-based organizations and community members received free services and resources.  Projects included health fairs, participation in a national night out project, and health education with participants of a soup kitchen.
