Learning Objective 1: Describe key components of a framework model of care that prevents or minimizes use of restraints use in vulnerable populations across all healthcare sectors.

Learning Objective 2: Outline strategies that help to support the integration of practice change and the creation of evidence informed cultures to avoid the use of restraints.

This poster demonstrates a framework model of care created to support the uptake of evidence-based practices to assist in the prevention and minimization of restraint use in vulnerable populations at risk across all healthcare sectors. A provincial nursing association in Canada is leading an initiative, with funding from the provincial government, which seeks to support healthcare sectors in implementing best practices to improve care to vulnerable populations at risk for restraint use.  The benefits of this model include: a framework that facilitates an approach to care that assists healthcare providers to ensure the provision of safe care to vulnerable populations at risk for restraint use; promotion of interprofessional knowledge transfer regarding prevention; alternative approaches and assessment, de-escalation and crisis management including safe  minimal use of restraints to avoid self and/or other injury when alternatives are unsuccessful; and, increased utilization of evidence-based decision making in regards to alternatives to use of restraints.

The framework provides direction to healthcare providers working with vulnerable populations at risk of restraint use. The elements of this model have assisted in raising awareness on the use of restraints and alternative options for the use of evidence based strategies to prevent or minimize the use of restraints. This framework model supports the development and dissemination of  best practices known to meet the unique needs of vulnerable populations at risk of restraint use.

This presentation demonstrates that such an framework supports healthcare providers in evidence based approaches to care proven to be effective in facilitating the prevention or minimization of restraint use in vulnerable populations. The Poster illustrates how supporting nurses as knowledge professionals has enhanced evidence informed alternatives to use of restraints.
