Learning Objective 1: The learner will be able to identify the functions and significant impacts from laboratory evaluation among nursing students in Macao.
Learning Objective 2: The learner will be able to mention some benefits from laboratory evaluation among nursing students.
Nursing laboratory evaluation is commonly used in institutes located in Asia, including Macao, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China. However, little is known about how laboratory evaluation affects nursing students in a way to improve their nursing skills. From the feedback of nursing students, suggestions will be given to nursing educators or administrators for improvement of nursing program.
Objective:
The purpose of this study was to explore and discover the outcomes of laboratory evaluation among nursing students.
Design:
This qualitative approach allowed the investigators to explore deeply the issues evolved from nursing laboratory evaluation. Initially, nursing students were interviewed individually. Their responses were transcribed verbatim to facilitate analysis and theme identification. The findings will subsequently be used to develop a questionnaire which will be distributed to all nursing students in Macao.
Participants:
Sixteen nursing students (7 males and 9 females) across four levels (years 1-4) were invited to describe their perceptions after having their nursing laboratory evaluation.
Results:
These nursing students agreed to present in the invitation to verbalize their perceptions. One principal theme that discovered from the study, i.e. the benefits after taking the laboratory evaluation, was transcribed verbatim to express the participants’ perceptions.
Conclusion:
The study shows that nursing laboratory evaluation is essential to nursing students in Macao since the nursing laboratory evaluation acts as a gate to qualify the nursing students’ skills before going to clinical practicum. The outcome suggests that nursing students could build up their competence, responsibility and confidence after taking nursing laboratory evaluation.
