C 02 Supporting evidence based nursing practice using informatics resources and tools

Sunday, 17 November 2013: 2:45 PM-4:00 PM
Description/Overview: The purpose of this symposium is to explore means to translate evidence into nursing practice by developing and using healthcare informatics tools and resources. One resource currently available is an international standard terminology, the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP). A number of initiatives are underway to use ICNP to manage nursing knowledge and facilitate documentation and evaluation of nursing practice. Initiatives in the area of ICNP harmonization aim to facilitate use of existing nursing classifications and interdisciplinary health care terminologies. Another effort is the development of ICNP Catalogues or content subsets for specific nursing practice areas or patient conditions. All of these initiatives require the collaboration of experts in informatics and nursing. A project involving clinically expert nurses in pediatric pain and experts in informatics and library science will be provided. This project will provide an example of developing a resource that can be shared with nurses internationally to promote evidence-based practice. A discussion of how an ICNP Catalogue can be used to help nurses document their practice and to demonstrate the impact of nursing on patient safety, patient outcomes will also identify how these data can be used as a foundation for further research.
Learner Objective #1: The learner will be able to identify the potential for using informatics resources and tools to support evidence-based practice.
Learner Objective #2: The learner will describe examples of informatics resources and tools to support evidence-based practice in nursing.
