EBP Dissemination to Improve Care for Adult Oncology Inpatients
Karen E. Canale, RN, OCN, Adult Medical Oncology, 8O, University Hospital, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY, USA

As members of the Nursing Research Council (NRC) in our academic medical center, we have the opportunity to learn about evidence-based practice (EBP) and use that knowledge to address clinical issues important to nursing at the hospital level. EBP at the unit level remains a challenge, however, not only in terms of lack of awareness of EBP among unit staff nurses and still ‘advanced beginner’-level knowledge of the NRC representative, but because patient acuity and severity place such demands on nurses for time and energy—and rightfully so. How does one catch the ears and minds of busy nurses so those nurses can learn how to make that busyness more evidence-based and directed toward improved patient outcomes? This session will describe strategies tested, successes experienced, and lessons learned in bringing the principles of EBP to nurses caring for adult oncology inpatients.
