Is the SANE Role within the Scope of Nursing Practice? The Sexual Assault Nursing Resource Service in Taiwan

Quite a few regulations of women and children have been prompted recently in Taiwan, and those regulations have improved their life safety. Meanwhile, nurse become one of members to assist forensic exam. From overseas documents, Sexual assault nurse examiner (SANEs) are registered nurses trained to provide expert assessment of victims of sexual assault, document injuries, as well as collect and preserve forensic evidence for use in court. Studies show that in areas where SANEs have been implemented there have been higher rates of reporting by victims, better quality of evidence collected, and higher rates of convictions. At the same time in Taiwan, sexual assault victim is a new and popular research topic, but related nursing studies are very scanty, even lacks of the complete and systematic nursing curriculum project that to satisfy victim's demand on physical, psychological, law and some other specified requirement. OBJECTIVE: We sought to provide a descriptive study of nurses perform their roles to handle sexual assault victim medical treatment, and instruction needs in Taiwan. METHODS: A confidential survey addressing staff demographics, examination procedures, educational needs, and medical and legal issues is mailed to 160 responsibility hospital for sexual assault. Four hundreds of questionnaires will be filled in completes by clinic nurses. Percentage, mean, standard deviation and Product-Moment Correlation will used to analyze the data. The results will showed that (1) The role of the nurse involves providing care for the survivor and working cooperatively with other individuals in the legal system. (2) All forensic examinations of the sexual assault survivor in the emergency department include treatment and documentation of injuries, treatment and evaluation of sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy risk evaluation and prevention and so on.(3) The educational needs of nurse in sexual assault. (4) To understand the relation among rape myths, staff demographics and nurses work.
