Learning Objective #1: understand the formulation of a model using grounded theory methodology and the application of Benner's approach of novice to expert.
Learning Objective #2: understand the application of the data to the quilt model and the significance of holistic care for the dying patient, their family, and friends.

The Caring Quilt Model            The caring quilt poster presentation is a model that was developed using grounded theory methodology to explain the interaction between the dying patient, the family, significant others, and the nurse during the dying process. The model was created from nine cases that are based on the author’s actual experiences caring for terminally ill patients. This model utilizes Benner’s approach of novice to expert in order to explain the levels of end of life nursing care. The Caring Quilt Model represents all aspects of this care. A Quilt can symbolize warmth, caring, and dedication. These concepts, as well as, the pieces of a quilt are integrated together to explain in detail their relationship to holistic end of life nursing care. The Caring Quilt Model provides a visual tool that can be utilized for educational purposes for all levels of nursing: students to practicing. The learner will be able to understand: 1) The formulation of a model using grounded theory methodology;  2) Application of Benner’s approach of novice to expert;  3) Application to the creation of a quilt; and  4) Significance of holistic care for the dying patient, their family, and friends.
