Critical Thinking Week: An Evidence-Based Practice Poster Fair

Leadership and management are constantly looking for innovative ways to involve staff in learning about and implementing evidence based practice. The acute care unit is a 30 bed medical surgical nursing unit. In October 2005 the unit based shared governance council discussed ways to improve patient care on the unit. The nurse practitioner suggested thinking about ways to use research and evidenced based practices on the unit in our everyday practice of providing patient care. This led to the idea of having a poster presentation to share evidence based practice, best practices and improve critical thinking with staff.  After consulting with management, the following program was decided. The activity was a poster presentation of current and up to date evidenced based practices. Each group consisted of 2-3 members to work on their chosen topic. A nurse was identified as the leader of each group. Other staff, including Patient Care Assistants and Unit Secretaries, were assigned as members of each group so that all staff were included. Research materials and references were available via the hospital intranet library. The activity was organized by the nurse manager. Areas of priority were identified based on staff input, quality measures, and the nursing dashboard. Staff chose a topic area. A total of 18 posters were submitted. Topic areas included patient safety, hand hygiene, pain management, pressure ulcer prevention, fall prevention, smoking cessation, and clinical topics such as chest pain and sickle cell anemia. All participants’ posters were judged based on content and creativity. Posters were on display for one week. All of nursing were invited to view the posters and vote for the best poster. Staff and nursing leadership reported positive feedback about the program. Other units are considering replicating this on their units.
