Effectiveness of a Community-Based Program to Promote Regular Exercise Behaviors in Tao-Yuan, Taiwan

The aim of this study was to evaluate a community-based health promotion program in terms of changing: (i) attitudes with respect to exercise behaviors; and (ii) exercise behaviors. In this program, 3-4 people are selected in each preschool from 12 municipalities in Tao-Yuan, Taiwan, and they are designated as members of a ' kindergarten leaders' committee. They have opportunities to gain knowledge about and skills in healthy lifestyles including regular exercise, and undertake voluntary activities to serve other teachers and the parents of preschool students. Method: A questionnaire survey was used to collect information about teachers and parents groups. The data obtained for 123 teachers respondents, aged 18-65 years, and 155 parents, aged 25-40 years. Results: From teachers groups were satisfied very much with their access to health-related information. The groups of parents participated enthusiastically health-related activity. Subjects¡¦ social support, perceived barriers and regular exercise behaviors well all significantly improved, especially regular exercise behaviors(teacher: 28.7% to 37.0%; parents : 27.4% to 37.5%).In conclusion, this community-based health promotion program was effective in improving health-related attitudes and behaviors.
