Tsann-Juu Su, RN, PhD, School and Graduate Institute of Nursing, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan
Learning Objective #1: realize that the lived experience of infertile women who terminated treatment after IVF failure was transforming their hope of pregnancy. |
Learning Objective #2: realize that counseling for infertile women should include providing positive and negative information, and help them in defining their future. |
Assisted reproductive treatments provide the hope of pregnancy for infertile women, however, even with this treatment not everyone will have this hope become a reality. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of infertile women who terminated treatment after in vitro fertilization (IVF) failure. Using a qualitative research design, twenty four subjects were recruited from infertile women who experienced IVF failure and decided to terminate further treatment. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed based on interpretive research strategies of phenomenology. This study protocol was reviewed and approved by the University Review Board for Research. Informed consent was obtained from each subject. The theme of lived experience which was emerged from the data was transforming hope. This theme included three categories: (1) accepting the reality of infertility, (2) acknowledging the limitations of high technology treatment, (3) re-identifying one¡¦s future. The results illustrated that counseling for these women should include providing positive and negative information, evaluating response to treatment, and help them in defining their future.
