An Evidence-Based Practice Curriculum: The RN-BSN Scholars Program

Within the nursing profession, there has been an increased emphasis on evidence-based practice (EBP) in response to professional priorities, global trends, and national circumstances. Hospital nursing staffs are working to achieve and maintain Magnet status as one critical indicator of ability to deliver the highest quality of patient care. Clearly, the capability of the nurse to implement EBP is essential. Nurse educators must examine current curriculum outcomes and teaching strategies to promote understanding of and competence in EBP.

In collaboration with a Magnet hospital, the college faculty is developing an EBP curriculum for a cohort of 200 nurses seeking a baccalaureate degree. Prior to implementation of the EBP curriculum, baseline data is being obtained on current students. Students entering the new program will be assessed at entry, 6 months into the program, at program completion, and 12 months post graduation using the EBP Beliefs and Implementation Scale, the EBP Readiness Scale, and the Nurse Satisfaction and Intent to Leave Scale. The turnover rate and the Patient Satisfaction Survey results from the units staffed by the RN students will also be obtained. Analysis of the data will be used to determine whether the educational intervention has made a significant change in the application of evidence-based principles in clinical practice and patient response to the nursing care provided.
