Purpose: The purpose of this pilot study was to establish the validity of the English Version of the Japanese Self Evaluation Scale on Role Model Behaviors for Nursing Faculty which measures faculty’s perception of their role model behaviors and Faculty Attributes Questionnaire which asks demographic information. Both instruments were developed by Japanese faculty from Chiba University where reliability and validity of both have been established. Method: Japanese faculty developed an English translation of the instruments using Berelson’s back translation method. These faculty traveled to the US in January, 2005 where the translations were presented to an expert panel of US faculty convened to review the instruments for content and comprehensibility. Suggestions from this panel were used to revise question structure and grammar. The finalized English version was then distributed to a convenience sample of US faculty via email. IRB approval was obtained through the University of South Florida.. Data was collected at an internet site and recorded via a secure server. Analysis: A descriptive analyis will be completed with the data. This data will then be shared with the Japanese faculty. Results will be reported at the conference. Findings: Results of this survey may lead to a proposal for a cross-cultural study of US and Japanese nursing faculty and their role modeling behaviors for professional development. It is the intent of the investigators to use the findings of this pilot study to conduct a larger comparative study of the similarity and difference of faculty’s role model behaviors between Japan and the United States.
