The Relationships between Nurses' Perception of Quality of Home Health Care and Their Attributes in Japan

OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationships between nurses' perception of quality of home health care and their attributes in Japan. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: The conceptual framework of the study includes 27 attributes of nurses as independent variables, and their perception of quality of home health care as the dependent variable. The 27 attributes were selected based on a literature review of home health care. METHODS: To collect the data, 250 municipalities and 250 visiting nurse services randomly sampled in Japan were asked by mail whether they could participate to the study. Sixty six municipalities and 38 visiting nurse services agreed to participate, and instrument packets were distributed to 656 nurses. Each nurse was asked to complete two instruments. The first was the Nurses' Attributes Questionnaire (NAQ) for examining the 27 attributes of nurses. The content validity of NAQ was validated by a pilot study and a panel of experts. The second was the Self-Evaluation Scale on Home Health Care Nursing (SES on HHCN), developed to measure nurses' perception of quality of home health care. It has well established reliability and validity (Miura et al, 2005). FINDINGS & IMPLICATIONS: Three hundreds and eighty (57.9%) nurses’
responded and 311 valid data were analyzed. The results showed that 7 of the 27 attributes related with nurses' perception of quality of home health care. The 7 attributes were number of professional journals read regularly, frequency of research utilization, intention to continue work as a nurse, presence of a problem in work, frequency of clinical teaching experience, academic background, and type of program of one's basic nursing education. To specify the important factors, which relate with nurses' perception of quality of home health care, the relationships among the 7 attributes should be examined in a further study.
