Purpose:

The purpose of this presentation is to explore the authors’ experiences in developing and conducting an international research study in Costa Rica using Orlando’s deliberative nursing process theory, including the steps of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Methods:

Orlando’s deliberative nursing process theory gives a clear, consistent approach to international research that can be applied to simple and complex situations (Potter & Tinker, 2000). It can be used for resolving stressful behaviors, dealing with person-to-person encounters to avoid conflict, and can assist with decision making (Faust, 2002).

Results:

Orlando’s deliberative nursing process theory can be used as a roadmap to international nursing research to assist nurse researchers with identifying personal perceptions, thoughts, and feelings toward the culture of interest and formulate research interventions based on the needs of the identified population. This process also allows the nurse researcher to identify whether the research goals can be met and if further research is needed.

Conclusion:

International research can be profoundly beneficial to the field of nursing. Nursing research is presented globally to assist with broadening the knowledge of not only nurses, but also the general population across diverse populations. International research can provide discoveries that impact nursing education, the delivery of health care, and population health across the world. Extending research beyond various geographical borders can develop cultural competence by increasing cultural awareness. Though the process of international research, alliances can be developed, educational curricula can be enriched, and policy change can be influenced though the production of innovative data. As populations become more culturally diverse, it is imperative to generate knowledge regarding values, beliefs, traditions, and practices of various cultures to have a significant impact on clinical outcomes (Hanucharurnkul, 2018; Kenner, 2017; J.G. Opollo & Opollo, 2014; Williams & Lee, 2019).

The process of guiding research itself can be a daunting task for any nurse researcher. International research involves unique challenges, including lack of familiarity with the local language and culture, inadequate resources and funding, issues with logistics, and prolongation of the research process (Eckhardt, 2016; Pichke et al., 2017; Safdari, Ehtesham, Robiatry, & Ziaee, 2018).Using nursing theories such as Orlando’s deliberative process nursing theory, can assist nursing researchers by providing a guide to completing the international research process successfully. Each step of Orlando's deliberative nursing process theory will be explored in greater detail and focus on how to incorporate international research efforts.
