SYMPOSIUM

Integration of Evidence-Based Practice Into Acute Care Settings
Learning Objective #1: Describe the necessary infrastructure for implementing EBP in the acute care setting
Learning Objective #2: Discuss the various challenges and solutions that accompany implementation of EBP in acute care settings
The ARCC (Advancing Research and Clinical Practice through Close Collaboration) model offers a mechanism to implement and test the role of an “EBP mentor” and other facilitators that are identified by nurses across the globe as necessary for best practice. From ongoing dialogue about how to best implement the ARCC model, a collaboration was formed between nurse researchers at NYSNA, Pace University, Upstate Medical Center and the University of Rochester Center for Research and Evidence-based Practice for the purpose of advancing EBP in acute care environments. This collaboration led to the design of a pilot study to test the ARCC model in three acute care sites. This symposium will assist nurses who are contemplating, initiating or actively engaged in implementation of EBP to better prepare for the challenges that arise during this process. Session 1 will contain information about the benefits of collaboration when implementing EBP. Session 2 will detail strategies for overcoming identified challenges that were discovered during the collaborative project, including practical implementation strategies. Session 3 will outline the infrastructure necessary for successful implementation of EBP, including champions, culture shifts and administrative support. Session 4 will conclude the symposium with a discussion of selected models for implementing EBP and how to actualize them.
