Using Mobile Information Management Tools to Promote Evidence-Based Practice in an Academic Environment
Learning Objective #1: identify the common issues associated with designing and implementing a mobile information management solution to achieve EBP in care delivery.
Learning Objective #2: describe how mobile information management tools faciltate EBP in practice.
This symposium consists of four presentations describing the outcomes of a funded HRSA grant entitled “Using Clinical Information Systems at the Point of Care (CIS@POC).” The overall program goal was to enhance clinical decision-making and patient care processes of undergraduate nursing students, and ultimately, practicing registered nurses through informatics-facilitated practice. Core informatics knowledge and computer skills are essential for all nurses to function effectively in the current health care environment. Thus, this project: 1) integrated a production ready CIS (CliniComp) into the skills lab at the Ohio State University (OSU) College of Nursing, 2) simulated the clinical practice environment using virtual cases and life-like manikins linked with actual information systems technology, 3) embedded informatics knowledge into the existing medical /surgical (including high acuity) curriculum, 4) further developed informatics resources at OSU; 5) educated faculty, students and practicing nurses in informatics content and skills, and 6) implemented use of mobile computing devices with clinical reference tools by faculty and students. The first of the four presentations will describe the vision for use of information management tools, embedding informatics concepts, and informatics competencies into the undergraduate curriculum to enhance EBP at the point of care. The second presentation will describe how the information management tools, informatics concepts, and informatics competencies were implemented into the medical/surgical and high acuity curricula. Assignments and classroom exercises will be described. The third presentation will examine how the information management tools, informatics concepts, and informatics competencies were included in simulated learning scenarios. The fourth presentation explains what information technology standards and support infrastructure must be in place to be successful in executing a viable program.
